HISTORY OF QUILTING

Create Michigan's historic

lighthouses in machine applique.

In 1999 I was teaching quilting to a group of students and they challenged me to create a Michigan Lighthouse quilt, that was when Aunt Mary’s Originals was formed.  I started drawing the blocks with the lighthouses that were most familiar to me, as each student listed their favorites we ended up with 12 for a quilt.  As each month progressed and they completed more blocks they came back with more photos of lighthouses they wanted.  My list grew to the point that my husband and I took a trip around the state to photograph the lighthouses.  Then the ladies decided that the Mackinaw Bridge should be added and we added that.  The first quit ended up with 14 lighthouses and the bridge.  They kept coming and we kept making more blocks.  Before long I was traveling to several quilt shops and teaching my lighthouse quilt to more than 90 students.

My husband does all of the photography of the patterns and our daughter, son and granddaughters help with assembling the patterns.

Each pattern lists a few facts about the lighthouse it features.  All lighthouses finish 12 1/2 " square; the bridge finish is approximately 28" x 44".

I started quilting in 1967 with the help of a  Jenny Beyer quilt as you go book.  I found quilting to be very relaxing and enjoyed the time spent at the quilting frame in the   evening when my three  small children were in bed.   I began  professionally teaching quilting in 1989 and I enjoyed the challenges of teaching this art to others.
