The first lighthouse was built on Bois Blanc Island in 1829, but the storms on Lake
Huron took it’s toll on the lighthouse and in 1837 the tower broke apart and fell
into the lake. A second lighthouse was constructed in 1867 on a long, narrow peninsula
that juts out into the lake from the islands north side. The lighthouse today is
the third lighthouse on this spot. The light is now automated, and is a private residence.
