built in 1868-8170 at the entrance to the Grand Island Bay and Harbor on Lake Superior.
The light was needed to allow ships to use Munising Harbor as a major harbor of refuge.
The lighthouse is wood framed house with an attached square wooden tower. The light
was operated only until 1913, when it was replaced by new range lights. The Grand
Island light is located on the southeast shore of the Island. It can be viewed by
private boat or one the boat tours.
