In the early 1850’s the discovery of the Marquette Range iron ore deposits and the
opening of the St. Mary’s Falls Ship Canal at Sault Ste. Marie in 1855, Marquette
became a very important commercial harbor. The lighthouse was built about 1853 and
reconstructed in 1855 and the keepers dwelling was enlarged in 1906. Still operational
today it is used by the Coast Guard.
