The Peter Doughtery Mission originally established at this location gave this lighthouse
it’s name. The original dwelling was built in 1870, with it square tower still stand
today. The white lighthouse is surrounded by forest on three sides. The State of
Michigan purchased the property after the Second World War and established a park
there. The lighthouse is maintained by the Peninsula Township.
