located in the Straits of Mackinac 1 mile from the Upper Peninsula shore. St. Helena
Island was a center for the fishing industry in the straits area. The lighthouse
was first activated in 1873, in 1923 is was automated and abandoned. The Great Lakes
Lighthouse Keepers Association obtained a lease in 1986. The association began restoring
the lighthouse in 1989, with the help of Boy Scout Troop 4 & 6 from Ann Arbor and
Troop 200 of Calument/Laurium.
